Middle Grades Education (BS)

Program Purpose


The Bachelor of Science in  Middle Grades Education prepares and develops individuals who are committed to working with young adolescents in the middle grades (6-9). This degree allows a candidate to be licensed to teach in the middle grades (6-9) in North Carolina Public Schools  in two of the following content areas: English/language arts, mathematics, social studies, and/or general science.

Middle Grades Education (BS) candidates will demonstrate the ability to assess student learning.

Middle Grades Education (BS) candidates will plan, implement, and reflect on assessments that will monitor and support student learning.

Global Perspective

Middle Grades Education (BS) candidates understand how cultural beliefs, values and sensibilities shape people's perceptions and impact global decisions and actions.

Leadership Development

Middle Grades Education (BS) candidates will utilize reflection to promote personal growth as evidenced in the edTPA product.

Pedagogical Knowledge

Middle Grades Education (BS) candidates understand and apply the major concepts, principles, theories, and research related to young adolescent development that support student development and learning (NCPTS Standard I).

Professional Dispositions

Middle Grades Education (BS) candidates will demonstrate appropriate professional demeanor (including adherence to standards of professional ethics) and commitment, as well as engage in positive professional interactions.
