Creative Writing (Minor)

Program Purpose


The minor in creative writing provides a background in appreciating and writing original creative works in four principal genres: fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and play/scriptwriting. This interdisciplinary minor incorporates the study of literature and other disciplines to provide students with the foundation needed to become successful and resourceful writers, readers, and intellectuals in various disciplines.


Learning Outcomes


Language Use and Mechanics

Upon completion of the Creative Writing minor, the student will demonstrate the effective use of language, including detailed description, such as sensory detail, concrete and figurative imagery, diction, and good sentence structure, including the basic mechanics of writing such as grammar and punctuation.

Organization and Structure

Upon completion of the Creative Writing minor, the student will show logical organization in writing, which includes cohesiveness between idea, form, and structure.

Use of Genre Convention

Upon completion of the Creative Writing minor, the student will show proficient knowledge of the basic elements of craft in at least one of the four principal genres: fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, or play/scriptwriting.

Voice and Style

Upon completion of the Creative Writing minor, the student will present an engaging and original voice, which includes stylistic choices that indicate an awareness of audience and context.
