Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) (UG Cert)
Program Purpose
The undergraduate certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is designed for students who wish to further their education in the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages. The certificate helps prepare individuals planning to teach English as a second language (ESL) in the US or English as a foreign language (EFL) overseas.
Learning Outcomes
Analysis
Upon completion of the TESOL Certificate, students will be able to analyze teaching and assessment materials and discuss their suitability for teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in various contexts.
Audience awareness
Articulates a sophisticated, discipline- appropriate understanding of audience; identifies principles for accommodating audience relevant for the field; explains how course work has prepared them to analyze and communicate effectively with audiences. Identifies work from the portfolio that demonstrates concepts of audience awareness and accommodation.
Global awareness
Upon completion of the certificate in TESOL, students will be able to articulate an awareness of the global nature of the English language.
Proficient use of source material
Students are able to synthesize, integrate, and contextualize source material. Their use of sources is sophisticated and demonstrates familiarity with literature in the field; in-text citations and work cited are accurate, and correctly formatted
Synthesis of theory and practice
Upon completion of the undergraduate TESOL certificate, students will be able to (a) discuss how courses in the program have helped them understand the relationship between theory and practice, (b) identify theories and perspectives most salient for the field, and (c) explain how theory informs practice.
