College of Fine Arts and Communication
Art Education (MAEd)
Program Purpose
The mission of the School of Art and Design is to provide outstanding facilities and a creative environment for an exceptional and diverse community of faculty, staff, and students. We will combine international experience with a challenging, multidisciplinary curriculum and exhibition schedule that encourages an awareness of individual, social, and cultural issues in a safe and environmentally conscious setting. As a major research center for art and design and as the premier visual arts and art education program in the University of North Carolina system, the School of Art and Design will advance critical thinking, creativity, and leadership in the visual arts by sharing our research with our state, our nation and the world.
The mission of the Art Education Area is to prepare and develop professionals... who are academically and technically proficient; knowledgeable, skilled and reflective in their practice; committed to the empowerment of all people to develop their full potential; and committed to the role of public education in a democratic society.* Candidates in Art Education should exhibit a strong positive attitude toward art, teaching, and children. They should be personally involved in art production, the study of art, developmental theories of child art, and the roles of the artist, art historian, art critic and aesthetician in our society.
