College of Allied Health Sciences

Clinical Laboratory Science (BS)

Program Purpose

The purpose of the Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) program at East Carolina University (ECU) is to prepare students for practice as clinical laboratory professionals. As laboratory professionals, ECU CLS graduates will perform laboratory tests on patient body fluids, producing the highest quality test results which will be used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. These professionals insure the accuracy of patient test results by performing quality control procedures and maintaining the laboratory’s instruments.

The clinical laboratory scientist's mastery of the body of knowledge in laboratory medicine and proficiency in the performance of laboratory techniques also allows him or her to serve as a consultant to other healthcare providers regarding the selection and interpretation of laboratory test results. ECU CLS graduates are eligible for national certification as laboratory professionals.

Learning Outcomes

“Body of Knowledge” in Medical Laboratory Profession

Senior CLS students are required to complete a comprehensive exam at the end of each of 4 clinical rotations related to that subject area (CLSC 4992, 4993, 4994 and 4997). This knowledge is also required to pass the ASCP Board of Certification exam upon graduation to be certified as an entry-level MLS.

Clinical Skills Assessment

Demonstration of physical and technical abilities required for entry-level medical laboratory scientists.

Laboratory Mathematics

At the end of the academic year, junior CLS students will demonstrate laboratory-related mathematical skills. These skills include: calculating dilutions, titers, chemical solutions, cell counts, and other math related to laboratory testing and result reporting.

Laboratory Quality, Assurance, Improvement, and Management

Laboratory-related skills required for all students who graduate from medical/clinical laboratory science programs by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS).

Laboratory Safety

Written and demonstrated behavior related to proper safety requirements, including Universal Precautions and chemical safety, as required in CLSC biosafety Level 2 (BS-2) student laboratories.

Library Resource Utilization

Utilizing ECU library resources for CLSC 4801 and 4802, which are designated as writing-intensive. In addition to a variety of written assignments, students participate in a group research project. Students will be assessed on their ability to utilize ECU library resources as tools to complete these assignments.

Medical Terminology

At the end of the academic year, junior CLS students will demonstrate knowledge and proper use of medical terminology as related to the medical laboratory profession.

Professional Behavior

CLS students must learn professional behavior in order to be successful in on-campus courses, clinical rotations, and as working laboratory professionals. Expected behavior includes: attendance, punctuality, reliability, assignment completion, social skills, moral integrity, ethical behavior, etc.
