Forensic Anthropology (UG Cert)

Program Purpose


The purpose of the Forensic Anthropology certificate in the East Carolina University Department of Anthropology is to provide students with competency in the role of forensic anthropologists, the methods and techniques used to create a biological profile based on skeletal remains, and how they assess antemortem, perimortem, and postmortem changes to the skeleton.


Learning Outcomes


Anthropological Techniques in Forensic Investigations

Students will demonstrate knowledge of core concepts and basic forensic anthropological techniques in death investigations.

The Role of the Forensic Anthropologist

Students will demonstrate knowledge of the role of the forensic anthropologist in death scene investigations.

Understanding postmortem processes

Students will demonstrate knowledge of the stages of body decomposition and what variables affect its rate, how to estimate the post-mortem interval, in addition to identifying taphonomic indices on bone.
