Program Purpose


The graduate degree in health informatics and information management (MS HIIM) is a transdisciplinary academic program at the intersection of the disciplines of computer and information science and technology, health services administration and management, and more importantly the dynamics between the two. It is designed to prepare individuals to be informaticians as well as information management professionals who can work proficiently with clinicians and health services administrators in order to develop clear and effective health information strategies for health care organizations.


Learning Outcomes


Critical thinking skills (MS)

Students exhibit critical thinking skills in their internship experience.

Evaluation of Health Informatics Implementations

Students will be able to conduct evaluation of health informatics projects within a health care organization.

Health Care Data Analytics

Students will utilize evidence–based decision support in health care by applying data analytics tools and techniques when analyzing a dataset.

Health Information Processing Skills

Students exhibit understanding of the important role of health information transactions play in the process of providing care to the patient and the impact these transactions can have on workflow, and how health care professionals perform their jobs.

Knowledge in Health Informatics and Information Management

Students demonstrate substantial knowledge of health informatics and information management by being able to analyze database application, generate a design plan and execute the implementation of the plan.

Knowledge of Health Informatics Project Management (MS)

Students will be able to use project management skills to lead a health informatics project within a health care organization.

Knowledge of Privacy and Security in Health Care (MS)

Students will be able to analyze privacy and security scenarios for legal compliance, prepare training materials, develop policies and procedures, and identify and correct potential HIPAA/HITECH violation.
