Health Information Management (G Cert)

Program Purpose


The Health Information Management (HIM) graduate certificate provides students who already have a bachelor's degree the knowledge and skills needed in order to serve as a critical link between health care providers, payers and patients. The curriculum is designed to help students develop characteristics associated with an effective leader in health information management: critical thinking skills, problem solving abilities, communication and interpersonal skills, and ethical values.

Graduates of the HIM certificate program are eligible to apply to take the RHIA registration examination offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)


Learning Outcomes


Critical Thinking (HIM Cert)

Students exhibit critical thinking skills in their internship experience.

Knowledge (HIM Cert)

Students will demonstrate command of the essential knowledge domains needed in order to be a successful RHIA. There are five domains of knowledge: 1. Information governance; 2. Compliance with uses and disclosures of personal health information (PHI) ; 3. Data analytics and Informatics; 4. Revenue management; and 5. Management and leadership.
