Psychology (MA)

Program Purpose


Pursuant to the philosophy of East Carolina University, the General-Theoretic (MA) Psychology program (Industrial/Organizational Psychology concentration) pledges itself to (1) foster educational excellence in curriculum, instruction, and scholarship at the graduate level; (2) promote psychological research and scientific inquiry through attendance at professional conferences, professional contacts, and publications; (3) provide opportunities for students to learn from a variety of experiences; (4) foster a culture that values diversity, encourages interaction, and negotiates the differences among us; (5) uphold the standards of professional ethics and academic integrity; (6) promote multidisciplinary collaboration; (7) support academic freedom and shared governance; and (8) foster professional and public service.


Learning Outcomes


Application of I/O Psychology Knowledge and Skills

Students will apply Industrial/Organizational Psychology knowledge and skills in real-world settings.

Ethical Principles

Students will demonstrate knowledge of ethical principles and their application in leadership.

Knowledge of I/O Psychology Principles

Students will demonstrate knowledge of Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology principles, including: organizational behavior, personnel selection, ethics and professional practice, psychometrics, and contemporary issues in I/O Psychology.

Knowledge of Psychological Measurement

Students will demonstrate knowledge of psychological measurement to include developing measurement instruments, interpreting data relevant to those instruments, and knowing which instruments and indices are appropriate for which situations.

Knowledge of Research Design

Students will demonstrate knowledge of the research design process by conducting a research project on a topic relevant to their area of study in a timely fashion.
