Counselor Preparation and Research (PhD)
Program Purpose
The mission of the Department of Addictions and Rehabilitation Studies’ doctoral program is to serve as a national and international leader in the education of excellent and responsible rehabilitation and clinical counseling, and administration professionals. The doctoral program is designed to meet the critical need for doctoral prepared rehabilitation and clinical counseling, and administration professionals across the nation. The primary obligations of our program include:
- Extending the knowledge base of the rehabilitation and clinical counseling, administration profession in a climate of scholarly inquiry.
- Supporting faculty and students in publishing and/or presenting the results of scholarly inquiry.
- Preparing students to contribute to the conversations that inform professional practice by generating new knowledge for the profession through dissertation research focusing on areas relevant to rehabilitation and clinical counseling practice, counselor education, clinical supervision, and/or administration.
- Preparing students to assume positions of leadership in the profession and/or their area(s) of specialization.
Mission: To prepare the most qualified rehabilitation case managers, rehabilitation counselors, substance abuse counselors, clinical mental health counselors, vocational evaluators, counselor educators, administrators and researchers possible and to expand the professional knowledge base through research. To achieve recognition of the education and research at the state, national and international level.
Learning Outcomes
Counseling
PhD students will demonstrate evidence-based counseling practices. (CACREP 6.B.1.d)
Leadership and Advocacy
PhD students will demonstrate knowledge of the role of counselors and counselor educators advocating on behalf of the profession and professional identity. (CACREP 6.B.5.i)
Research and Scholarship
PhD Students will demonstrate knowledge of research designs appropriate to quantitative and qualitative research questions. (CACREP 6.B.4.e)
Supervision
PhD students will demonstrate mastery of skills of clinical supervision. (CACREP 6.B.2.d)
Teaching
PhD students will demonstrate pedagogy and teaching methods relevant to counselor education. (CACREP 6.B.3.b)
